Welcome!

This is the on-line space for the Mellon Sawyer Seminar Transpacific Thought and the Problem of Asia, which will run through AY2024-25. Jointly organized by Kandice Chuh (GC CUNY) and Thuy Tu (NYU), this cross-institutional collaboration is centrally organized by the questions, What can the study of the emergence, circulation, and impact of the heterogeneous contemporary meanings of Asia and Asianness help us understand about current modalities of racism and racial formation? And, how can such study help us understand and best address the national or local impact of racism by engaging the global context of U.S. race making? Through regular seminar meetings, workshops, and other activities, this seminar occasions sustained critical engagement with such matters. (Please see the “project description” page for more detailed discussion.)

The seminar supports two dissertation fellows, a postdoctoral fellow (visiting lecturer) at NYU, and eight doctoral students with stipends.

Please write to [email protected] to be added to the distribution list for information and seminar readings, and with questions, or send a request to join the TranspacificMellonSawyer google group directly through google groups.
